    The Battle of Surfaces

Am 2. Mai findet das "Battle of Surfaces" in Palma/Mallorca statt.

In quotes: Federer and Nadal - Battle of the Surfaces

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal gave a joint press conference ahead of their 'Battle of the Surfaces' exhibition in Mallorca on Wednesday. Federer spoke in English and Nadal in Spanish – with the odd English phrase thrown in. The match will take place on a on a half-clay, half-grass court. Their coaches will also be allowed on court.
                          By Jorge Viale

On having tournaments with mixed surfaces

Federer: “I think it's an interesting combination. I had been hearing about it for the last year and a half, and it finally happened. It's a fantastic idea, but a tournament, I don't know, we'll wait till tomorrow to have the information we need.”

Nadal: “Having tournaments with two surfaces... it's a too soon to think about that, but you never know. We are not ready to. For now, it's just a crazy idea.”

On what the match will be like

Nadal: “When you are playing on the grass side, you have to be faster, go to the net to avoid long rallies. On clay, you just have to look for them. The one playing on grass will struggle, the ball will bounce faster, the movement will be worse. The one playing on clay has the advantage.”

Federer: "We might take a set or half of it to get used to the surface and the adjustments we will need to do. I agree with him, the advantage will be on the clay's side.

When they heard about the idea

Nadal: “About a year and a half ago. I thought immediately it was an interesting idea, but it wasn't serious at that moment, just a crazy thing. As the time went by, it was finally possible, thanks to the Balearic Government.”

Federer: “I don't play exhibitions often . It's always different from regular matches – you can have a little more fun, play with the crowd... I've been waiting for this moment for a long time.”

On the state of affairs with the ATP over player unhappiness with the porposed 2009 calendar

Federer: “We've got similar views on the subject, and we see each other frequently, so it's important to be together in this. At his age, I wasn't that interested in this kind of topics. I wasn't confident to talk about that too, and Pete [Sampras] and Andre [Agassi] were the ones involved in that.”

Nadal: “In previous years, the locker room was kind of... scattered. Players didn't get along. Now it's totally different. We agreed to review the 2009 schedule changes and the situation is being thought over. We thank the ATP for hearing us.”

On what makes the other so tough on their favorite surface

Federer: “When he first beat me in Miami [in 2003] I already knew he was a great player. And the first time he beat me at the French, it was his first appearance. So he always had the strength and ability to beat anybody. I was a little surprised by his 2005 campaign but he proved himself the following year and now holds this clay streak... The topspin and his movements, those are the keys for him. As long as he's playing, it will be extremely difficult to win a clay tournament.”

Nadal: “I've only played [him] once on grass and the situation and I was concentrated on my game. It's difficult to evaluate. Of course, I've seen him play and he covers the court with ease, it's difficult to get him out of place.”

Nadal on becoming No. 1 in the Race this week [points earned in 2007 alone]

Nadal: “The main thing is to be one of the top guys of the year, that means we are following the right path. Being No. 1 ... I think this guy sitting on my left is one step ahead of me.”

Nadal on playing a week before Rome

Nadal: “I know these weeks coming are very important, with two Masters Series and Roland Garros, but we think there's no risk here. If it was, we wouldn't be playing, for sure.”
